“Coffee” is not a legal term. It is my way of illustrating the informal process by which you and your spouse sit down, over a pot of coffee, and talk about the terms to settle your divorce. If you are able to agree, as the attorney for one party, I would be happy to incorporate those terms into a “Separation Agreement” (the common name for the formal divorce settlement agreement) and to draft the other documents you will need to file with the court.  Your spouse should review the Agreement with an independent attorney.

However, if you are uncomfortable sitting down alone with your spouse or if you have tried to do so but the discussion ended in impasse or argument, there are other paths described on the following pages.
